5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT   January 4, 2009
Miss cox is back with a cd that is well worth the wait there is nothing more frustrating to wait sometimes years for a artist to release a new cd only to wonder what they were doing and you feel half the tracks are fillers knocked up at the last minute to finish the cd but none of that here EVERY track sounds like its been written produced and arranged with love and care if you love good music buy this album for me its a cd i would never want to be without in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Sang, diva!   December 24, 2008
I *promise* you, Deborah Cox works magic on her fifth studio release, "The Promise." Deborah incessantly promoted the awaited album on her myspace page, which evoked me to listen to it and I am delighted that I did. I have liked her ever since she debuted with "Sentimental" in the 1990s. Her voice has always had such personality, and, let's just be honest here, she has a set of pipes on her! If you aren't convinced, listen to her go toe to toe with none other than Whitney Houston on the song, "Same Script, Different Cast." This Canadian-born beauty is at her best when she does ballads, but don't sleep because her up-tempos are listenable by all means.

"The Promise" is not at all a lengthy work. In fact, it is rather short, clocking in at a mere forty minutes and containing ten tracks. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis aided Cox with this album and they did such a great job. This album is nice from start to finish, but the standout tracks are what really make it shine. The album opens with the piano-filled "Love is Not Made in Words." It is not hard to fall in love with this song because of the great lyrics, delivery and production. What a nice way to begin an album. The title track is another fine moment. This song is too filled with piano. The lyrics are both profound and beautiful. Cox is telling her honey that life does not promise anything, but she promises that she will always be there. The first half of this album is stronger than the last bit. "Down 4 You" and "All Hearts Aren't Shaped the Same" are decent tracks, but neither hold a candle to the title track. Deborah brings out her sensual side in the lovely "All Over Me." Here, there are barely any instruments; Cox chooses to croon. The lyrics are sure to get any couple into the mood.

Deborah Cox has truly mastered the craft of singing. Purchase this album and let her tell you all about the highs and lows of that thing called love.

Awesome album by Deborah Cox!!! Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are the true music masters and they help craft 6 bangin' sure fire jams for Miss Cox!!! A must buy especially if you enjoy the production of James (Jimmy Jam) Harris & Terry Lewis. Janet Jackson should definitely take notes!
