It grows on you fast November 23, 2008 At first I liked it, but now I love it! It grows on you, and the hooks really get you hooked.
I will agree that this isn't Dokken stuff, which is kind of a surprise since these two use to write a lot of the Dokken music when they were on the road. Jeff kind of sounds like Don in some ways. I highly recommend this CD.
If you take the best Dokken release, after the 88-89 breakup, this CD is way better than all of them. Obviously, prior to them getting back together, that was great music that just doesn't get old. I think it's safe to say, that this CD is like that, it's a classic that won't ever get old.
Shadow life part 2 May 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A lot of people seem to like this CD, that is why I bougt it. A lot of positive reviews usually prove accurate. I will probably make a lot of people mad with my opinion but here it is. First, the CD is not horrible in the least. There are many positives. Production is good, musicianship is good, album shows progression, there are some good riffs and a few hooks sprinkled throughout. This CD is better than a lot of stuff out there, but that doesn't make it good. I couldn't believe how much this sounded like Dokken's "Shadow Life." In fact, it could be Shadow Life part 2. Most of the songs are slow and meandering, absolutely nothing remotely memorable. "Zero the end" has promise but it is smack dab at track 6, in the middle of very substandard songs. I don't know if Jeff Pilson is trying to, be he completely apes Don Dokken...the style and tone are so similar, I had to check to see if Don was actually singing. It doesn't mean Pilson's voice is bad, he sounds very good, but nothing distinguishes him from Don Dokken, making him sound like a substitute or lesser copy. I wish these guys would keep making music because the talent is evident and I have been a big fan for a long time. I wish Dokken would get back together but not if this is the musical direction they are heading. No ballads, nothing uptempo, no shreading except for one solo, no memorable chorus, nothing to sing along to, just a lot of blandness. So a lot of people like this, and you might too. I did not and can not recommend this. The closet thing this sounds like is "Shadow Life" and that album was not good, but if you enjoyed it, you won't be disappointed with this offering.
A Pleasant Surprise January 12, 2006 Okay, so it's not 1984 and these guys aren't in their 20s anymore. Keeping this in mind and understanding this is no remnant of "Tooth and Nail" or "Back For The Attack", I write this review. I bought this cd on a whim as I am a big Dokken & Lynch Mob fan. I had limited expectations as I believe most 80s hair metal band's recent works are sub-par in respect to their glory day efforts. I have to say that this cd is a lot of fun. I have found it to be extremely addictive from first listen. If you are a fan of the aforementioned bands, I think this is a must have. I have to give props to J. Pilson. Who knew he had the pipes to sing like this? Wish Pils and Furious George would do a follow up. Take it for what it's worth on its own...pretty darn good.
Super rock album! June 9, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this CD on an impulse and have absolutely no regrets. As a guitarist myself, I've always admired George Lynch's playing - there are some players who have something special that sets them apart from the herd (players like Blackmore, Rhoads, Page, Wylde, Buckethead, Gilbert)and Lynch is one of them. He's no major league virtuoso I'll grant you, but he's no slouch either. The riffing on this album is tight and melodic, the solos interesting and Pilson's bass playing/singing fits the groove pretty well. For me, the key ingredient to a good CD is whether you can hum the tunes after the songs have ended and for this album, the music stays in your head for a long time.
The other half of Dokken! April 26, 2005 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having been a huge Dokken fan, it has been tough with the on again off again relationship of Lynch and Dokken.
But with this album, Lynch and Pilson have put together an album better than Dokkens last 4 albums.
With Pilson's voice sounding alot like Don Dokken, this album sounds more like the Dokken of the mid to late 80's than the Dokken we have now (though I have liked the Dokken albums too). Great lyrics, musicianship, and just plain rockin', this album is very good. I like every song here and some of them really stand out. Lynch can still play a mean guitar and that was what was missing from the last 2 Dokken albums that Lynch played on.
If you liked Dooken or Lynch Mob, oyu won't be dissapointed in this very well done album.
